The Desert Institute of the Healing Arts is located in Tucson, Arizona. I attended their Shiatsu program, graduating in 2002. The Shiatsu program is 700 hours, and takes just under one year to complete. I currently work there as an instructor in the Shiatsu department. This school has an excellent 1000 hour massage therapy program as well, and a combination massage/shiatsu program. The Desert Institute is now part of a national group of highly acclaimed bodywork schools called Cortiva Institute.
The National Holistic Institute is located in Emeryville, California. I attended their 720 hour massage therapy program, graduating in 1998. In the full time program, this took about 10 months to complete.

In order to become nationally certified, a therapist needs at least 500 hours of training and must pass a written test administered by the board. Continuing education is required to maintain certification. I have been nationally certified since 2000.
